After reading the Bruce Deachman column, I was perplexed about why he wasn’t embracing the Canadian Football League. After contemplating it for a while, I am in total agreement.

I have always been a true fan of the CFL. There were the glory days of Jackson, Lancaster, Clements, Pinball, Wilkinson, Reed and others, but along the way the shine faded. Maybe because no team ever made it to Halifax or Quebec City. Maybe it was because the CFL became just a minor/pro league of American players using it to make their way back to the NFL.

The crowds have diminished over time. Even the Grey Cup is now a hard sell in many markets. Television coverage is a joke, no matter how hard TSN tries. And now we have a commissioner who wants to basically turn the league into a smaller version of the NFL.

The Professional Women’s Hockey League will thrive. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the CFL. The league will never return to what it once was.

RIP, CFL.
