The first voice of Pender Radio hit the air waves Saturday, launching a brand new radio station, live from an Airstream trailer.
The radio studio is located beside the Community Hall, near the summer Farmers Market, with the all the radio magic coming from inside a renovated vintage Airstream trailer, with a stage attached to the airstream for live performances, but on market days it acts as a hangout spot, according to one of the founders, Laurie Storrie.
“We started just over a year ago and formed a not-for-profit organization and began recruiting volunteers,” says Storrie.
“It was humbling and very gratifying to experience the feedback from those at the Market,” she says.

The very first voice to hit the airwaves came from George Fowlie, president of Pender Radio. After that Laurie Storrie hopped on, a morning DJ and the technical director of the station.
The project was founded by George Fowlie and Laurie Storrie, Jaime MacLean and Matther Coutts.
“The feeling today is truly hard to put into words, I tried to start a community radio station here over ten years ago, but didn’t have the resources or team behind me to make it into reality,” says Storrie.
Storrie says the four founders felt the impact of their work Saturday after they “flipped the switch on this morning, surrounded by 40 or so volunteers and DJS dozens of people crowded around the deck to celebrate.”
As of day one, Storrie says they’re already reaching an audience of nearly 500 unique listeners, with over 1,200 connections in the first six hours, (half the population of Pender).
“We live in a wonderful community of supportive Penderites,” adds Storrie. “To do something you love, surrounded by people you love is a truly a dream come true.”
