Jackie Stewart has witnessed all 75 years of Formula 1’s prestigious history.

Stewart called Juan Manuel Fangio his ‘ultimate hero’ after watching him win five drivers’ championships in the 1950s.

Jim Clark then impressed Stewart with his driving style in the 1960s, before he won three titles of his own in 1969, 1971 and 1973.

Jackie Stewart then became a team owner, with Stewart Grand Prix competing for three seasons before being bought out by Jaguar.

His team still exists on the grid today in the form of Red Bull, but his exit from the paddock as a custodian of a Formula 1 outfit coincided with Michael Schumacher’s dominance beginning while racing for Ferrari.

The German’s record with the Scuderia has never been matched, but Lewis Hamilton arrived at the team hoping to continue his legacy.

Ferrari haven’t won a championship since 2008 when they triumphed in the constructors’ championship.

That run is going to continue for another season, with McLaren and one of their drivers set to wrap up both titles this year.

But, Stewart has made a prediction about Hamilton’s future at Ferrari that the team’s fans will be very encouraged by.

Hamilton is currently 175 points adrift of Oscar Piastri at the top of the drivers’ championship, and 42 points worse off than Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc.

There have been glimpses of promise since his move from Mercedes, such as his Sprint Race win in China and a podium in the Sprint Race in Miami.

Leclerc said Hamilton was the only positive for Ferrari at Silverstone, when he missed out on his first Grand Prix podium since his move to Ferrari to Nico Hulkenberg.

There are fundamental issues with Ferrari’s car this year that team principal Fred Vasseur is trying to get to the bottom of, as their performance has dropped off significantly since they narrowly missed out on winning the constructors’ championship last year.

Speaking to The Times, Stewart said: “I still like to watch a Grand Prix and go when I can.

“I see no reason why Lewis Hamilton couldn’t find success at Ferrari.

“Red Bull has reigned supreme for so long, I think the sport and the fans needed to see a change.”

Lewis Hamilton’s ‘negative’ 2025 F1 results could impact Ferrari’s commercial value

There is a lot of pressure on Hamilton to perform, given his reputation and the commitment Ferrari made to the seven-time world champion when they decided to part ways with Carlos Sainz to bring him in.

The Tifosi, Ferrari’s loyal fans, expect a combination of Hamilton and Leclerc to be more than strong enough to win a title.

They’re going to have to wait until next year’s car is ready to see if they’re competitive enough during the upcoming regulation changes to match that ambition.

Hamilton has been warned his performances could impact Ferrari’s commercial income, with the team said to have benefited from a £60.4m increase in revenue since his arrival.

In the era of the Formula 1 cost cap, that’s a serious upside to Hamilton being signed by the team.

But, he and the team both didn’t sign off on a deal for monetary reasons, with success on the track their ultimate aim.
