Many stores, public markets and tourist attractions will remain open in Montreal Monday for National Patriots’ Day — known elsewhere in Canada as Victoria Day, though banks, government offices and some transit services will operate on reduced schedules or close altogether.

Here’s a rundown of what to expect in Montreal on Monday, May 18.

Commerce

Many stores and shopping malls will be open, including the Eaton Centre and Complexe Desjardins.

The Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ) and Société québécoise du cannabis (SQDC) stores will be open. Hours may vary by location.

Public markets including the Atwater, Maisonneuve and Jean-Talon markets will be open.

Government services

Banks, other financial institutions and government offices will be closed.

Municipal offices will be closed. Montreal’s 311 phone line will be available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This includes the city’s municipal court (775 Gosford St).

Garbage, recycling and compost services will be unaffected, with waste pickup services keeping to their usual schedules. Ecocentres will be open.

Canada Post offices will be closed, but privately run locations may be open, according to the schedule of the host business.

Culture and leisure

The Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium, Biodôme, Botanical Garden, Insectarium and Biosphère will all be open.

Montreal arenas, swimming pools, sports centres, gyms, libraries and cultural venues have their schedules set by the local borough.

Transportation

Société de transport de Montréal (STM) métro and buses will operate on reduced schedules, which can be consulted at stm.info. Lost and found services will be closed. Note that with the REM’s Anse-à-l’Orme branch opening, a new bus network for the west and north of the island takes effect Monday.

Exo buses will run on a Saturday schedule and commuter trains will use Sunday schedules, meaning no service on the Mont-St-Hilaire, Candiac or Mascouche lines. Adapted transit hours will be 6:30 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Laval and Longueuil transit services will operate on a Saturday schedule.

The Réseau express métropolitain will run on a Sunday schedule, with regular service to the new Anse-à-l’Orme branch.

Parking meters will remain in operation and normal restrictions enforced.
