Photographer Bruce Moffat to showcase work of Vancouver Island’s natural beauty

Comox Valley’s highly regarded nature photographer, Bruce Moffat, will be presenting on May 24 at the Comox United Church from 3–5 p.m.
Comox Valley Nature (CVN) will be hosting the event with Moffat as a part of their May general meeting, and CVN invites its members and the general public to partake in Moffat’s work through his presentation, “Island Vignettes from a Nature Photographer’s Life.”
Moffat, who is also the coordinator for the CVN Nature Photography Group, has prepared a handful of short wildlife vignettes collected over the past seven years on Vancouver Island. Each of these shorts will be played with Moffat pausing in between to reflect on the experiences and challenges for each of the diverse subjects covered.
The shorts will include some of Moffat’s entries in the Comox Valley Photographic Society’s annual Imagefest show at the Sid Williams Theatre. The audience will have time to ask questions after each short film, with more time for discussion after the event wraps up, so be sure to bring your curiosity! Moffat will also display some of the tools he used to capture some of the images for an evening that is sure to inspire nature photographers of all levels.
Moffat is a retired professional photographer, a member of the Comox Valley Photographic Society (CVPS), and the current coordinator of CVN’s Nature Photography Group. Moffat has been an avid photographer since he was a teenager and has focused on nature photography for the past 20 years. He has been published regularly in the local Comox Valley Land Trust calendars in addition to having his work in four of the last five CV Collective magazines. His latest published shot is featured on this month’s cover of Scout Life magazine.
Moffat is well known to CVN members (particularly to the birders), generously sharing his photographs with the CVN website and newsletter. In the last couple of years, Moffat has had fun with drone photography, organizing CVN members and volunteers from CVPS to create the spherical panoramas the public can see in CVN’s online Nature Viewing Guide.
The CVN website also features a long list of nature viewing guides, including an interactive nature viewing sites map for the Comox Valley. Under the publications dropdown menu, you can find CVN’s newsletter and brochures that include downloadable PDFs of the Comox Valley Nature Viewing Guide (2023) and the Comox Valley Trees of the Year (2025).
Founded in 1966, CVN, also known as the Comox Valley Naturalists Society, is one of the oldest environmental societies on the North Island. Meetings and lectures of are normally held on a Sunday of most months. Meetings are open to the public, including children and youth. New memberships are always welcome. This year, CVN will be celebrating their 60th anniversary!
