Algoma Manor Nursing Home is announcing an expansion of its current clinical services, which will now include specialized pain management and additional specialist supports.

These expanded services will operate under the name Unika Medical Clinic Algoma (UMC). The initiative aims to improve access to timely, specialized care for individuals across the Algoma region who currently face long wait times and significant travel for specialized treatment.

Through this partnership, patients will now have access to experienced pain-management specialists Dr. Kevin Smith and Dr. Michael Gofeld, who have been serving the Algoma region through Sault Area Hospital since 2023 and whose expertise will enhance the scope of services available within the community.

Algoma Manor CEO Pamela Ficociello said: “We are incredibly grateful for this opportunity to expand our services and better meet the needs of our community. Access to timely and effective pain management is essential to quality of life, and this partnership helps remove significant barriers for individuals living in rural and northern communities.”

Chronic pain affects thousands of Canadians and can significantly impact physical health, mental well-being and daily functioning. In rural regions, accessing appropriate care often requires travelling long distances or enduring lengthy wait-list delays that can worsen symptoms and reduce overall outcomes.

The introduction of local pain-management services will:

Reduce the need for out-of-town travel
Improve wait times for assessment and treatment
Support individuals in managing chronic and acute pain closer to home
Enhance overall quality of life for patients and families

The new pain-management clinic will begin accepting referrals after June 15, 2026.
