High-tech gyms, trendy run clubs and booming facilities centered on wellness and recovery are turning Houston into a fitness hub where there’s something tailored for a variety of lifestyles.
Athletes gather on Saturday mornings in the blazing Houston heat for run clubs such as Zone Fitness Training, or ZFT, and Soul Ties Run Club, while others test out their favorite warehouse gyms or popular Pilates studios such as Solidcore and Sweet + Soul Studios.
Gym culture is growing in Houston, with a 2026 EoS Fitness expansion, the launch of high-end gyms such as the viral Midtown Club Studio, new wallet-friendly Crunch Fitness locations in several Houston suburbs and the latest Life Time gym coming soon to Richmond.

Massive state-of-the-art gyms
For Alphaland owner and Houstonian Christian Guzman, the Houston fitness scene is “contagious.”
“To me, the biggest things are the natural elements of Houston,” Guzman said. “It’s hot as hell, it’s humid as hell. There’s something about just being out in the natural elements and feeling the wind hit your face when lifting and sunlight hitting your muscles.”
Guzman is the owner of one of the biggest and most popular gyms in the country. It sits on 18.5 acres in Missouri City, which he describes as “a dream location for someone who is obsessed with fitness.”

Alphaland, which opened in 2022, features three gyms, two basketball courts, sand volleyball, saunas, a café, a lounge area and an Alphalete Athletics clothing store.
Guzman, who grew up in Missouri City, said he was inspired to open the gym to create something close to home after being kicked out of multiple gyms for filming his workouts. Both creators and non-creators are welcome at Alphaland, he said.
New, Houston-based place for recovery and fun
After hard workouts, many athletes look for ways to relax, cool down and recover, and the new, Houston-based Earned Recovery offers events across the city for people who want to feel good and be their best selves.
Earned Recovery co-founders Joshua Kalu and Devonn Brown host recurring events that feature a live DJ, cold tubs, yoga, cold plunges, saunas, massage therapy and healthy snacks.

“We just saw the escalation of the growth that can happen and the need that the city had for activation and recovery,” Brown said. “There are so many gyms popping up all the time in Houston, left and right. I don’t feel like there was a space for this.”
Brown is a fitness influencer, and Kalu is a retired NFL player.
Kalu first hosted a few recovery gatherings for family and friends in his garage before deciding to expand to larger venues.
“I saw the need, or the lack of, where people work out,” he said. “They move around every day, but nobody pays attention to their body. They just sleep, watch some Netflix and don’t do anything for their body.”

When asked about Houston’s fitness scene, Brown jokingly said that “everything is bigger and better in Texas,” and that he’s seen the community evolve since moving from California.
“You get a piece of feeling good,” Kalu said. “People want to be a part of feeling good and looking good. The drinking culture is not dead all the way, but fitness and working out and taking care of your body is shifting the narrative in Houston for sure.”
