A Calgary volunteer high school coach has been arrested for the reported sexual abuse and exploitation of a student over two years, police say.
The rugby coach at Henry Wisewood High School, 50-year-old Drew Alan Robertson, reportedly met the victim when she was 15-years-old, using his “position of trust” to groom her before the assaults began.
Police say he had contact with the victim through her school and through extracurricular activities.
Robertson was arrested on May 13 following an investigation. He faces charges of sexual assault, sexual exploitation, and making sexually explicit material available to children. He is expected to appear in court on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, officers say the victim is receiving support from the Luna Child and Youth Advocacy Centre.
“Coaches are supposed to be instructors, leaders and mentors,” said police Staff Sgt. Chris Tudor of the CPS Child Abuse Unit. “Sexual exploitation by a person in a position of authority is a betrayal of those values, and offenders must be held accountable.”
Anyone who believes they are a victim of sexual assault is encouraged to report it regardless of when it occurred, and anyone with information about these or similar incidents is asked to contact police at 403-266-1234 or leave a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
