Surrey social justice choir sings to help students reach higher education

Surrey-based Aequitas Singers are warming up for a spring concert in Fleetwood.
The social justice choir will perform “There Is Something About This Country” at Northwood United Church on Saturday, May 30.
The 7 p.m. concert is a fundraiser for Bright Beginnings Foundation (BBF), which helps some of Surrey’s most vulnerable students pursue their dreams of higher education.
Established in 2015, BBF works to fund full tuition, student fees (including medical benefits) and/or educational materials to enable students to attend a public post-secondary institution and program of their choosing, according to the website brightbeginningsfoundation.ca.
The 26-voice Aequitas Singers will sing songs that reflect “the choir’s love for and pride in our magnificent country” with accompanist Norm Olding and choir director Silvia Grassi at Northwood, 8855 156 St., Surrey.
“All selections have been written and/or arranged by Canadian artists and reflect the choir’s commitment to social justice issues. The evening will prove to be engaging, reflective, and inspiring,” concert planners promise.
Tickets are sold for $20 (adults) and $15 (seniors, kids under 12) at the door and online in advance, tickettailor.com. Refreshments will be served.
An adult-only non-audition choir, Aequitas Singers aim “to educate and create awareness of social justice issues such as poverty, racism, violence against women, homophobia, aboriginal education, literacy, global and peace awareness.”
Launched in 2013, the choir has performed at various events and locations in the region including Surrey Santa Parade of Lights, Centre Stage at Surrey City Hall, Harrison Landing retirement home and more.
