15 charges laid for extortion incidents in Abbotsford and Surrey

A man who was facing six charges for an extortion-related shooting in Abbotsford now faces nine more charges in Surrey.
According to court records, Gursewak Singh, 22, was charged last Thursday (May 14) with one count of extortion on Sept. 6 in Surrey and six offences from Dec. 14 that include extortion using a firearm and unlawfully discharging a firearm.
He also faces two counts of arson damaging property from Dec. 15 in Surrey.
Surrey Police Service (SPS) reported in a press release on Dec. 14 that they were investigating a report of shots being fired at around 2:30 a.m. outside a business in the 8000 block of 120 Street.
The release stated that the outside of the business – Paratha 2 Pasta – had been damaged, and although staff were inside at the time, nobody was injured.
SPS reported that the incident was believed to be extortion-related.
In a press release on Tuesday (May 19) confirming the new charges, SPS said that the arson charges from Dec. 15 relate to two vehicles being set on fire in a business parking lot in the 12400 block of Old Yale Road.
The business had also received extortion threats, SPS said.
Singh was first arrested in Abbotsford following an extortion-related shooting in Abbotsford on Dec. 17.
That incident took place outside a business in the 31000 block of King Road at around 9:45 p.m. Nobody was injured.
It was the second time in a month that the same business was targeted.
Officers who arrived on scene shared the suspect vehicle’s description with other units. A vehicle matching the description was spotted on Highway 1 near Whatcom Road.
The car was pulled over, and the driver was arrested.
Police announced two days later that Singh had been charged with discharging a firearm for the shooting on Dec. 17. They also released a photo of him, saying that “disclosure is necessary in the public interest to assist with the investigation.”
He has since had five more charges added in relation to that incident – four of them for weapons offences and one for extortion using a firearm.
Singh remains in custody at this time.
