Conditions are favourable for the development of funnel clouds across much of eastern Alberta on Tuesday, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.
The agency has issued dozens of special weather statements that cover the eastern half of the province — as far south as Calgary and as far north as the Northwest Territories border.
According to its alerts, ECCC said the types of funnel clouds likely Tuesday are generated by “weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms.”
“This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.”
Landspout tornadoes do not usually wreak havoc, but ECCC said they can still cause some damage to trees, roofs, and toss debris short distances.
ECCC said to treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously and take shelter if you see one.
