SENIORS’ RESOURCE: Housing-cost help for White Rock/Surrey seniors

Housing is by far the biggest expense for most, if not all, and the cost can be particularly daunting if you’re a senior on a limited income.
Those finding themselves struggling with rental payments may be eligible for financial help through SAFER – Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters.
According to information at bchousing.org, the program provides eligible B.C. residents aged 60 and older with monthly rent-subsidy payments, to help make the cost of shelter more affordable.
In addition to a minimum age of 60, eligibility criteria includes having a gross annual income of $40,000 or less; having lived in B.C. for at least a year; and paying more than 30 per cent of your gross monthly income towards rent.
The grants are not available to those living in a long-term care facility or residence that is subsidized through another government agency.
For those who are approved for a SAFER subsidy, payment – a minimum of $50 per month – starts the same month the application is received.
Clients must reapply annually for the subsidy.
