‘Fill the Bay’ at Surrey Food Bank with Madryga and more Thursday

A new Fill the Bay community event will take place at Surrey Food Bank’s warehouse in Newton this Thursday afternoon, May 21.
The new fundraising and food drive event aims to help stock food bank shelves ahead of the summer months, one of the hardest times of year for families facing food insecurity.
From 3 to 6 p.m., people can expect an interactive, family-friendly community event featuring live entertainment, games, food, behind-the-scenes warehouse experiences and hands-on ways to support local families.
Global BC’s Mark Madryga will host the drop-in event alongside Howard Blank at 13478 78 Ave., Surrey.
“Summer can put extra pressure on families in so many ways,” said Kim Savage, executive director of Surrey Food Bank.
“When routines change and costs add up, many households feel stretched even further. Fill the Bay is about bringing the community together before summer begins so local families know support will still be here when they need it.”
Event details are posted on surreyfoodbank.org/fill-the-bay, where registration and donations are encouraged.
The second-largest food bank in British Columbia, Surrey Food Bank supports close to 20,000 people monthly across Surrey and North Delta, with nearly half of them children.
Surrey Food Bank history dates back to 1981 when a coalition of churches opened a food cupboard in Surrey in response to an economic downturn.
“What began as a temporary solution has grown into a 23,000 square foot facility in Newton, three community depots, a fleet of vehicles, hundreds of volunteers, and a dedicated staff team,” the website says.
