Moss and its sequel, Moss II, are two of the best games released in virtual reality. In Moss, players guide Quill, a fierce but adorable little mouse, through a storybook adventure. In addition to directing Quill’s actions directly like a standard platformer —jumping, fighting, and solving puzzles — the player, acting as the omniscient reader of the book, steps in to help out directly. Enemies can be frozen, and obstacles and puzzle pieces can be manipulated by the “reader” to aid Quill on her journey.

The game is absolutely gorgeous, with an enchanting soundtrack. Puzzles are fun and satisfying. Quill is ridiculously cute and likes to be scratched behind the ear. She will also give high fives. She cannot, however, swim, which was an unpleasant surprise.

Both games and the Twilight Garden DLC are being brought together in a new console and PC release. This version has updated graphics, new cutscenes, and a new “smart follow camera.” There is also a setting to skip combat altogether, an option previously only available on the Meta Quest 3 and the Quest 3s.

While it is disappointing that Quill’s adventures aren’t continuing with Moss III, it is great to see this wonderful series get a second life. Moss: The Forgotten Relic comes to PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 1 and 2 this summer.
