Police are investigating a Wednesday morning shooting in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood that they believe is related to extortion.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting at a home near 57 Avenue and 148 Street at about 4:40 a.m. PT, according to a news release from the Surrey Police Service (SPS).
While the home was occupied at the time, police say no one was injured.
“Upon arrival, police noted damage to a residence and evidence of shots fired,” SPS said.
It said the extortion response team is leading the investigation and forensic services will be in the area processing physical and digital evidence.

According to the SPS extortion statistics webpage, as of Monday, there had been 108 reported extortions and 16 “related shots fired” so far this year.
