The person stabbed to death during a noon-hour altercation on Tuesday in a busy and densely populated neighbourhood near the city’s downtown core has been identified by police as a 32-year-old man from Mississauga.
Peel Regional Police are not, however, releasing the victim’s name at this stage of their investigation, which is focused on hunting down the “armed and dangerous” man believed to be responsible for the brazen and deadly daylight attack that unfolded just steps away from one of the busiest intersections in Mississauga, in the heart of Cooksville.
Following unconfirmed reports of an argument between at least two men near the corner of Hurontario and Agnes streets, a short distance north of Dundas Street, the victim was fatally stabbed moments after noon.
The violent incident took place in a parking lot at the back of a building at 3024 Hurontario St., according to police.
The alleged assailant, whose image was captured by a number of surveillance cameras in the bustling commercial area, immediately fled the scene on foot and was last spotted headed east on Agnes Street towards — and possibly across — Hurontario Street.
Meanwhile, the wounded man was tended to by several people in the area until emergency responders arrived on the scene. He was pronounced dead a short time later, according to police.
Investigators aren’t revealing any other details about the deadly altercation, including what it may have been about.
Police did release on Tuesday night a detailed description of the wanted man and a photo of him that was taken from surveillance camera footage.
They noted the suspect is to be considered “armed and dangerous” and that anyone spotting him should call 911 and not approach him.
The wanted man is described as Black, with a medium build, short black hair and a black goatee. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt with a black zipper-style jacket, fluorescent green pants, Timberland-style boots and a black watch on his right wrist.
