Music fans in Mississauga can get an early earful of blues, soul and jazz ahead of this year’s Southside Shuffle Blues & Jazz Festival.
Organizers say the Beggars Blues Banquet, scheduled for Saturday, June 13, will help raise funds to support the long-running festival and its efforts to bring live blues and jazz music to the community each year.
Headlining the event is Hogtown Allstars, a supergroup made up of several former members of the legendary Downchild Blues Band. The group features Chuck Jackson, Pat Carey, Gary Kendall, Jim Casson and Tyler Yarema, along with Maple Blues Band alumni Teddy Leonard and Howard Moore.
Collectively, the musicians have earned more than 20 Maple Blues Awards, five JUNO Awards and numerous international blues and jazz honours.
Joining the lineup as a special guest is Quisha Wint, a Toronto vocalist known for blending reggae, Motown, gospel, jazz and R&B influences. Wint, a former Canadian Idol contestant and Humber College jazz graduate, has performed alongside several prominent Canadian musicians throughout her career.
The evening will also spotlight emerging talent with an opening performance by Callie Back, winner of last year’s Southside Shuffle Youth Challenge.
Festival artistic director Chuck Jackson said the concert offers fans a unique chance to see Hogtown Allstars perform in a smaller venue setting.
“This is a rare opportunity to catch Hogtown Allstars in an intimate setting,” said Artistic Director Chuck Jackson. “Our fans know the band from Southside Shuffle stages over the years, but since they won’t be appearing during festival weekend this year, the Beggars Blues Banquet is a chance to experience the band live in Port Credit while helping support the future of Southside Shuffle.”
The fundraiser will take place upstairs at the Port Credit Legion. Doors open at 7 p.m., with the show beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets are $40.
Guests can also take part in a barbecue downstairs at the legion before the show, with proceeds from some beverage sales also supporting the festival.
Tickets are available online through Southside Shuffle Blues & Jazz Festival or in person at Impressionable Gifts in Port Credit.
