Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have identified a woman found dead west of Ottawa earlier this month as 61-year-old Geraldine Fulcher of Calabogie and say they believe someone targeted and killed her.
On May 6, police officers from the Renfrew detachment were called just before 6 p.m. to an unspecified part of Lanark Road in Greater Madawaska and found a person dead, according to a news release on May 7.
Police said Friday investigators believe her death was targeted and not an indication of a “broader threat.” They did not announce any arrests or suspects.
“The OPP is aware of community concerns and wants to reassure residents that this matter is being taken seriously,” police wrote, without elaborating.
“The OPP asks that the public refrain from sharing unconfirmed information, which can cause additional harm to the victim’s family and may interfere with the integrity of the investigation.”
Police said there will be an increased police presence in the area as part of the investigation and further information will be released as it is available.
Calabogie is a hub in Greater Madawaska, a rural township of about 2,850 people as of the 2021 census.
