The Carolina Hurricanes have just called out a referee mistake on Ivan Demidov‘s spectacular goal in Game 1 against the Hurricanes.
And several analysts now believe a major change is needed in the NHL’s referee management, as numerous officiating mistakes have been criticized by Carolina journalists over the past few hours.
Including one in particular!
Cory Lavalette of The North State Journal shared his frustration on social media during the game.
“Newhook gets away with a hold, and Demidov scores going the other way to make it 4-1”
If the referees had called that hooking penalty, according to them, Demidov’s goal would never have happened.

This is exactly the kind of sequence that can fuel conversations around the hockey world, especially in Carolina, but let’s be honest, it’s just part of the game.
According to Hurricanes fans’ analysis, Alex Newhook apparently hooked a Carolina player just before the offensive sequence that led to Demidov’s goal, but still.
On one hand, the Hurricanes are absolutely right to point out that referee decisions can influence the course of a game, but it works both ways as well.
In short, attention will now shift toward Game 2, which will be played Saturday night at PNC Arena. And the Canadiens will surely want to continue imposing their game on the Hurricanes to take a 2-0 series lead.
