A pedestrian is dead after being struck by the driver of a large truck in Cabbagetown Friday afternoon, Toronto police say.
It happened in the area of Gerrard Street E. and Parliament Street around 12:20 p.m., Duty Insp. Jon Rose told reporters.
When paramedics arrived, they found a woman suffering from severe trauma. Paramedics tried to save her life, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. She is believed to be about 39.
The driver, who was travelling south at the time of the collision, remained on scene. There’s no word on charges.
There will be a large police presence in the area and the intersection will be closed for hours, Rose said.
“An event like this is very sad and very traumatic for the community,” Rose said.
Police’s traffic services unit is investigating.
Gerard Street is closed between Berkeley and Sumach streets, police said in a social media post.
Police are asking drivers to avoid the area and consider alternate routes.
