Starting again this weekend, the Winnipeg Police Service will increase its presence on Winnipeg Transit routes and at transit facilities as part of an ongoing effort to reduce violent crime and disruptive behaviour.
Police say officers will be riding buses and patrolling near transit stops, including bus shelters and stations throughout the city.
The initiative was first launched in September 2025 in response to rising concerns about safety on Winnipeg’s public transit system.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service, the project has already shown positive results. Police reports of crime on transit were reduced by 18 percent compared to 2024 levels.
Despite that decline, police say violent crime on transit reached a historic high last year. Over a five-year span, 325 violent crimes were reported at Winnipeg Transit locations in 2024, nearly triple the number reported in 2019.
Members of the rapid response unit will be involved in the renewed operation, with officers working in both uniform and plainclothes. Police say the goal is to prevent, detect, and suppress violent crime and disorder in transit spaces.
The City of Winnipeg says everyone deserves to feel safe while using public transportation, adding the goal is for the transit system to remain welcoming, reliable, and secure for all Winnipeggers.
