Winnipeg firefighters respond to blazes at apartment building, nature preserve

Winnipeg firefighters have responded to two major fires since Friday, including a blaze at West End apartment building and another one at a nature preserve that previously caught fire about a month ago.

Firefighters responded to a grass fire in the Transcona Bioreserve near Devonshire Drive Friday afternoon, the city said in a release Saturday.

The grass fire spanned over 900 square metres, the release said. It was declared under control at around 5:20 p.m., about an hour after crews were called in.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service previously responded to a 4,000-square-metre vegetation fire at the bioreserve on April 26.

Crews also responded to a fire at an apartment complex in the 600 block of Ellice Avenue at around 4:20 a.m. Saturday. That fire was declared under control an hour later, the release said.

Emergency social services were at the scene to provide temporary support for displaced residents, the city said.

Both the Ellice Avenue and the bioreserve fire are still under investigation, the city said.
