Police say there will be “zero tolerance” this weekend after learning that some people are allegedly planning to attend events in Mississauga and Brampton to set off fireworks and cause disturbances similar to what happened during the Victoria Day long weekend.

In a statement posted to social media, Peel Regional Police said officers will have an increased presence at several gatherings across the region and warned that anyone caught using fireworks illegally could face arrest.

One of the events police referenced is called “Bunskin Day 2.0,” which has reportedly gone viral online and is expected to draw large crowds.

Const. Tyler Bell said additional officers are being deployed to ensure frontline emergency response services are not affected.

“We want to ensure that we can still respond to frontline requests for service, that we’re not detracting from frontline personnel,” Bell said.

Police also confirmed that investigators have been monitoring online discussions and plans for potential disruptions at events across Peel Region this weekend.

The increased police presence comes after several chaotic incidents at Chinguacousy Park in Brampton last weekend, where large crowds gathered, and fireworks were allegedly fired at people and from moving vehicles.

Bell said officers responded after people began shooting Roman candles at one another inside the park.

The park was later shut down for several days as police and city officials responded to the situation.

The crackdown also comes as complaints about fireworks continue to climb across Peel Region. Earlier this week, INsauga reported that the City of Mississauga received 84 fireworks-related complaints over the Victoria Day long weekend, compared to 52 complaints during the same holiday weekend last year.

Mississauga has tightened fireworks regulations in recent years, including restrictions on where and when fireworks can be set off. Roman candles are prohibited within the city.

Bell said Peel police have since worked closely with officials in both Brampton and Mississauga to prepare for any similar incidents this weekend.

He also issued a strong warning to anyone considering dangerous or illegal behaviour involving fireworks.
