Sebastian Cossa has gone from being the Detroit Red Wings goalie of the future to the league’s hottest trade rumor subject quicker than you can say “top prospect.”

With the Red Wings blessed with a stable of quality goaltending prospects, including Trey Augustine and Michal Postava, reports say GM Steve Yzerman is considering moving Cossa, especially if he can obtain a player who can help his team now.

The first indication of the Red Wings’ willingness to entertain that idea came when their Grand Rapids Griffins farm team used Postava exclusively in their two-round AHL playoff appearance. Postava earned that role by being more consistent than Cossa down the stretch. Both players enjoyed strong AHL seasons, but Postava posted better numbers. He also has the experience of having won a championship in the Czech top league in 2025.

If the Red Wings move Cossa, here are some logical trading partners:

Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers have been looking for a long-term solution in net for many years. Although he has only played one NHL game, the 6-foot-7 Cossa is believed to be ready for the show. Until Postava moved ahead of him, it was presumed he would back up John Gibson in 2026-27 and then perhaps step into the No. 1 role.

With the clock possibly ticking on Connor McDavid’s time in Edmonton, it would be a coup for GM Stan Bowman to acquire a goalie that was ranked 19th on TSN analyst Craig Button’s recent list of Top 50 Affiliated Prospects.

Cossa, 23, also played his junior hockey in the Western Hockey League with the Edmonton Oil Kings.

Philadelphia Flyers

The Flyers are looking for an upgrade over Sam Ersson. He’s 26 and played 33 games with a 3.12 and .870 save percentage. Cossa boasted a 2.33 GAA in the AHL with a .915 save percentage. He could grow with this young talent-laden Philadelphia team. The Flyers have a collection of younger forwards that would interest Detroit.

Florida Panthers

Both of Florida’s goalies, Sergei Bobrovsky and Daniil Tarasov, are UFAs. Even if Bill Zito can re-sign one of them, a highly touted, inexpensive youngster like Cossa would be an attractive pick-up as their No. 2. It would be like landing another Spencer Knight.

Ottawa Senators

The Senators have been exploring their options for a new backup for Linus Ullmark. The 6-foot-4 Swede Ullmark will be 33 on July 31. This would be another situation where the team could start Cossa as a backup and groom him to take over for an aging goalie.

New York Rangers

With the retirement of Jonathan Quick, the Rangers should be looking for a young rising star to back up Igor Shesterkin. The Russian veteran is 30 now, and the Rangers may see a chance for Shesterkin to help Cossa mature into an impact goalie.

Maybe Yzerman and Rangers GM Chris Drury could turn this into a larger, expanded trade that would include New York center Vince Trocheck and more of Detroit’s younger players. The Red Wings were interested in Trocheck at the March trade deadline, but the price was too high then.

But we also hear the Rangers might prefer to bring in a veteran backup like Detroit UFA Cam Talbot. It wouldn’t cost the Rangers any assets if they just signed a UFA.
