NORTH AUGUSTA — The U.S. Men’s Senior (Over 40) National Team continued preparations for next month’s Over 40 World Cup with a 3-1 victory over Ballers FC on May 23 at Lions Memorial Field despite rainy conditions throughout the match.

Roughly 100 fans filled the stands for the 7 p.m. exhibition game, braving heavy rain that eventually lightened as the game progressed. The wet conditions did little to dampen the energy around the stadium as spectators consistently cheered and applauded both teams throughout the night.

The U.S. squad wasted little time taking control of the match. Just five minutes into the opening half, forward JJ Kovacovich delivered the game’s first breakthrough with an impressive solo effort down the right wing. Kovacovich beat two defenders off the dribble while racing along the baseline before firing a powerful shot across goal into the top left corner to give the U.S. team an early 1-0 advantage.

Ballers FC responded with one of its strongest attacking sequences of the night shortly afterward. A Ballers winger drove aggressively down the sideline and into the penalty area before being taken down in the box, drawing a penalty kick opportunity. Midfielder Micah Paylor calmly stepped up and converted the penalty to cut the deficit to 1-1 and briefly swing momentum toward Ballers FC.

The national side continued to pressure Ballers FC through the midfield and added to their lead later in the match through Chris Arstrom. The buildup began with strong possession play through the center of the field before the ball was worked down the sideline and delivered back toward the top of the box. Arstrom curled a well-placed finish into the back post to extend the lead to 2-1.

However, the U.S. side regained control later in the contest with its third and final goal of the evening. The play started down the left sideline before a low ball was slid toward the top of the penalty area. A quick flick sent the pass through to a striker making a central run, and the attacker finished the sequence with a clean half-volley into the net to seal the 3-1 result.

While the final score reflected a strong offensive performance, the rainy weather created difficult playing conditions for both teams. Players frequently battled slippery footing and wet grass, forcing each side to simplify parts of its attack and rely more heavily on communication and positioning.

Following the match, U.S. coach David Jones said the team remains focused on trimming the roster and continuing preparations for international competition in Thailand.

“We’ve got about two more days of training camp, and I’ve got to reduce the squad down from 32 to 25,” Jones said. “Then we’ll go to Thailand and prepare to compete in the Over 40 World Cup, which is one week before the actual World Cup.”

The coach also pointed to several areas that still need improvement before the squad’s next appearance.

“Obviously the weather was hard to deal with on a technical level, so it was pretty hard to get into what we want them to do,” he said. “So mostly communication, movement and getting things done properly.”

Saturday’s match served as another important step in the development process for the over 40 national team as it continues building chemistry ahead of international play. Despite the weather, the US team showed flashes of strong attacking quality and organized buildup throughout the evening while Ballers FC remained competitive behind an energetic second-half response
