Brampton residents can get active and try out new sports gear using free, self-serve lockers coming to dozens of parks and outdoor recreation sites.
The free sports equipment lockers are part of a pilot project with Equip Sport and Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities, giving residents free access to sporting equipment at 30 locations across the city.
Depending on the location, equipment available through the lockers includes basketballs, soccer balls, frisbees and footballs.
“Using the Equip Sport mobile app, residents can unlock equipment at select city parks, play on site and return it when they are finished,” the city says of the new program. “The service is free to use, with no credit card or payment required.”
Fully funded by Jumpstart, the pilot project comes at no cost to the city and residents and “brings recreation closer to where people live, making it easier for residents to take part in casual, outdoor play without needing to purchase equipment or plan around formal facility access,” the city says.
“Recreation should be easy to access, close to home and available to everyone,” Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown said in a release. “This pilot gives Brampton residents free sports equipment in local parks, helping remove barriers and creating more opportunities for people of all ages to stay active.”
More lockers could be set up in the future, depending on the success of the program.
