The long-gestured sequel to World War Z could finally come to fruition, THR reports.

Paramount’s new CEO David Ellison hosted a press conference with his top executives in Los Angeles yesterday, where co-film chief Josh Greenstein cited World War Z as priority franchise under the new regime alongside the likes of Star Trek and Transformers.

Greenstein also indicated an interest in doing more with the horror genre. The studio has found continued success with the A Quiet Place and Smile franchises.

After World War Z scared up $540 million at the worldwide box office upon its release in 2013, a sequel was seemingly guaranteed but has yet to move forward.

In Marc Forster‘s action-horror film, former United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop a zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatens to destroy humanity itself.

J.A. Bayona and David Fincher have each been attached to helm a follow-up over the years, with Brad Pitt returning to star and produce.

There’s certainly plenty of material left to draw from in Max Brooks‘ 2006 novel on which World War Z was based but barely resembled.
