VANCOUVER, Wash. (KPTV) – A man armed with a knife was shot by an officer after he tried to break into a woman’s home early Tuesday morning, according to the Vancouver Police Department.
Just after 6:30 a.m., police responded to a burglary call in the 10900 block of Northeast 48th Street. Police said a woman reported she woke up to the sound of someone smashing windows in her home and believed it was a man who was known to her who had tried to break in a few days earlier.
The woman was able to get out of the home safely and get into her car to wait for police.
Police said officers arrived to find the man holding a knife approaching the woman in her yard. The man reportedly refused to drop the knife and kept moving toward the woman.
One officer fired his weapon, hitting the man, according to police. The man, whose name has not yet been released, was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The officer involved in the shooting and two witness officers have been placed on critical incident leave during the ongoing investigation.
No other details have been released by police at this time.
