The Winnipeg Police Service is reporting significant declines in violent crime and other key offences.

These details were released in the WPS 2025 annual Statistical Report on Tuesday.

The report provides a detailed look at crime trends, calls for service and community safety efforts across Winnipeg over the past year.

Violent crime, homicides see notable declines

Some of the areas where the police service saw numbers drop the most included firearm-related offences, youth crime and homicides.

Total crime severity decreased by 8.8 per cent in 2025, driven by a drop in violent crime severity of 11.2 per cent, one of the largest reductions on record.

Violent crime volume and severity both declined for a second consecutive year.

Meanwhile, homicides fell 48.8 per cent, while robberies were down 6.6 per cent, assaults down 4.1 per cent, firearm offences down 24.6 per cent and knife-related offences down 15.7 per cent.

Youth crime also decreased for the first time in four years, down 11.7 per cent, including sharp drops in violent and weapon-related offences.

At the same time, Chief Bowers says that although there has been encouraging progress in several key areas, important work remains ahead.

According to the report, calls for service remain high, while population growth and many of the social challenges related to that continue to place pressure on police and partner agencies.

“Behind every statistic is a person, a family, a neighbourhood, or a WPS member working to make Winnipeg safer,” said Chief of Police Gene Bowers. “These results reflect the commitment of our members, the strength of our partnerships, and the shared belief that community safety is everyone’s responsibility.”

Calls for service reach record levels

Dispatched events reached a historic high in 2025, up 6.0 per cent overall, with calls for serice averaging more than 2,000 per day, shining a light on the continued pressure officers and dispatchers face.

The report reinforces the importance of prevention, collaboration, evidence-based policing, and community-centred approaches to public safety.

The Winnipeg Police Service says it remains focused on frontline efficiency, accountability and modernized service delivery, with an emphasis on both enforcement and long-term prevention and intervention strategies.
