New Ocean Park signage to mark Surrey locale’s ‘historical significance’

New signage is coming to Ocean Park ahead of upcoming centennial celebrations, following council’s near-unanimous approval Monday (May 25) of a request from the Ocean Park Community Association.
The OPCA had asked that signs be installed at three locations – 128 Street and 16 Avenue, 130 Street and 16 Avenue, and 128 Street and 17 Avenue – “to signify the importance of the Ocean Park community,” according to a City of Surrey report.
Following council approval, they could be installed within a week or two, the report adds, noting an existing heritage road marker located in the 12900-block of 16 Avenue would not be affected.
Together, the signage would “further create a sense of place for the Ocean Park neighbourhood and further honour its history and significance in Surrey… while providing a consistent and coordinated signage approach within the community core,” the report states.
The measure passed without debate, with Coun. Pardeep Kooner opposed.
The signs are anticipated to be unveiled during commemoration ceremonies for centennial event, set for June 5-6.
