Surrey grants up to $3,000 for murals, block parties, food gardens, more

Surrey’s Our City program gives residents grants, resources and tools to make neighbourhood-improvement projects happen.
One example is a new mural created at an East Newton park by students and teachers at nearby T.E. Scott Elementary.
On May 27, a new community mural was painted at T.E. Scott Park, on 148 Street at 70 Avenue.
About 100 students, teachers and parents took part alongside Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke, city councillors and Surrey School District reps.
Painted on a building, the colourful artwork was developed by the students with local artist Carla Maskall to help make the park more welcoming and inclusive.
“This mural shows how powerful community ideas can be when they’re brought to life,” Locke says.
“This is exactly what the Our City campaign is all about – giving residents the tools and support they need to turn their ideas into projects that strengthen Surrey and build civic pride.”
The Our City program offers free resources to help residents host events and complete projects that enhance their neighbourhoods.
“Our City is designed to remove barriers and help residents make a difference in their community,” said David Sadler, community enhancement planner.
“Whether hosting a block party, building a food garden or developing other neighbourhood projects to improve your community, residents can contact us to find out how our resources can help bring their ideas to life.”
So far, more than 350 Our City projects and events have been completed with the help of more than 2,200 volunteers in Surrey. Resources include event kits, cleanup kits and Neighbourhood Enhancement Grants of up to $3,000.
June events include a workshop on making beehouse-supporting pollinators (June 6 at Surrey Nature Centre), chalk art at Forsyth Park (June 25) and a cleanup effort at Francis Park in Fleetwood (June 30). Details are found on surrey.ca/ourcity.
Other Our City neighbourhood cleanup events are planned July 8 at Royal Kwantlen Park, July 15 at Newton Recreation Centre, July 31 at Surrey Nature Centre and Aug. 21 at Holly Park, from 1 to 3 p.m. at all locations.
