Say what you will about Steven Guilbeault, but at least he has the courage of his convictions. Once he saw that the prime minister had signed an MOU with Alberta, he announced he would be stepping down this summer. Now his ‘climate caucus’ cohorts (about 14 of them) apparently don’t share his convictions. They sent Mark Carney a letter expressing their climate concerns, but chose to do so anonymously. Clearly, they feel maintaining power is more important than their superficial concerns.

LEADERSHIP LACKING

Downtown continues to deteriorate. Open drug use is normalized and has been for years. There are two realities: Andrew Knack’s reality of bland speeches and ignorance, and the reality experienced by everyday, law abiding Edmontonians who brace themselves for a downtown plagued by addition. It’s on the mayor to take responsibility and clean up downtown. This is not isolated to himself. City council as a whole, the premier, Minister of Public Safety Mike Ellis, MLA David Shepherd, MP Eleanour Olszewski and Chief of Police Warren Driechel all play a role. We must ask why downtown has turned into a slum, why it is tolerated. Edmontonians deserve much better and leadership is failing.
