What better place to crown the kings and queens of the Canadian 10K Championships than Queen Elizabeth Driveway in Ottawa?

A stacked field of distance superstars jockeyed for position over the scenic downtown Ottawa course, with the strongest, smartest and fastest of the group claiming the ultimate prize Saturday evening.

Alexander Outruns Men’s Field

Andrew Alexander claimed his first Canadian 10K Championship, crossing the line in a tie of 28:19. Thomas Fafard (28:22), who had a back-and-forth race with Alexander for most of the race, took silver. Ben Flanagan rounded out the men’s podium with his time of 28:34.

“Going into this weekend, I knew I was fit. Earlier this season, I played around a little too much and I found out that, if you leave people in it, they’ll get you. It’s a great feeling. I wanted to make it honest from the start and it felt good from the gun. It felt good through halfway. Just over the bridge, Thomas put in a surge. I caught back up with him afterwards and I felt good enough to get back in the race. I had a good kick, so I was happy with it,” Alexander said.

Caron Claims Her Crown

Florence Caron ran away from the field in her first ever 10K road race, taking gold with her time of 32:31. Sevanne Ghazarian took silver in 33:15. Cleo Boyd earned the bronze medal in a time of 33:17.

“I feel really good. It was a beautiful course and a great crowd. Cleo came out fast with me and I thought ‘Oh my God, we’re really rolling’. I looked at my watch and thought that I should slow down a little, but I just decided to race the race I ran. If it’s fast, it’s fast. If it’s slow, it’s slow,” Caron said.

Masters of the Ottawa 10K Course

This year’s Canadian 10K Championships were the first time Athletics Canada has awarded national titles and medals to Masters athlete age categories (age 35+), with strong performances among those age groups.

Olympian Lanni Marchant competed in the Canadian women’s masters age 40-44 10K field and finished with a time 34:09.

“I am cooked, but I’m really happy that I came out and did this. I was really hesitant to. I was injured since February, so I thought I wouldn’t bother coming, but I figured ‘Why not?’ because I want to show the younger athletes and also the athletes my age and older that it doesn’t hurt to get out there. It hurts while you’re in it. It’s hard. But it’s a good kind of hard and you get to line up against the next generation of the fastest runners. Hopefully there will be budding Olympians in here, too,” Marchant said.
