The Detroit Lions have had one of the most potent offenses over the past few seasons, and it’s because of the talent that they possess at several positions. Running back is probably the strongest position, and Jahmyr Gibbs has led the way for the group.

Gibbs is due for a contract extension soon, and what he’s been able to bring to the Lions will garner him a lot of money, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

“Gibbs is positioned to reset the running back market in a big way,” Fowler said. “Think $20 million per year or over. The Lions have expressed interest in doing a deal with Gibbs. It isn’t a lot of progress here yet; you have the next couple of months leading into training camp to try to hash this out, but because of the looming presence of Bijan Robinson, who’s also eligible for an extension, Gibbs is in a position where if he wants to wait for Robinson to go first, he can do that.

It will be interesting to see if Gibbs ends up waiting for Robinson to reset the market, but without a doubt, he’s going to be one of the highest-paid running backs in the league soon.

Gibbs finished last season with 1,223 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, as well as 616 receiving yards and five touchdowns. He does it all for the Lions, and he will be leaned on even more with David Montgomery gone, as he was traded to the Houston Texans.

He won’t be all alone, as the Lions signed Isiah Pacheco during the offseason to back up Gibbs.

The Lions should still be one of the better offenses in the league, and it will be interesting to see how they perform under new coordinator Drew Petzing, who was hired in January.
