Liza Soberano has officially announced her breakup with Enrique Gil.
The actress opened up on the split in an episode of the podcast series, “Can I Come In?”, saying that it happened almost three years ago.
“I’ve been honestly itching to tell people this because I haven’t been very truthful. Quen hasn’t been very truthful. Quen and I broke up,” she said.
“But yeah, we’ve been broken up for almost three years now,” she added.
She added that the reason why they did not announce it earlier was because Enrique told her “not to say anything about it first.”
“I don’t want to speak for him, but I think it was coming from a place of not wanting it to be real. And at the same time, you know, I agreed to that because I also didn’t want it to be real,” Liza said.
Liza said that she was afraid to announce the breakup because if people found out, “My career would go bad or you know, people just wouldn’t love me anymore.”
She added that she put it off to make others happy and safe.
Artist, podcast director, and host Sarah Bahbah asked Liza whether she left the relationship emotionally before she left physically. Liza said it was a “yes and no question.”
“I think a year before I actually broke up with him, there were already signs that were showing me that I was unhappy,” Liza said.
She said that she had a toxic habit of pushing things away and sweeping them under the rug because she was afraid of confrontation.
“I remember I did, like a mental check with myself and I accepted that there were certain things about him, that I wasn’t okay with, and that it’s just always going to be like that. And that’s just life. Like, you have to win some, you lose some, you have to deal with the good and the bad.”
Liza added that they were together for almost eight years when the breakup happened and that she “was genuinely expecting us to get married, like, soon, but then that didn’t happen.”
“And so when I broke up with him, I would say it was so it was such a beautiful breakup because it was still so full of love. That’s why I say yes and no, because it was so hard for me to actually break up with him, because I love him. I still love him as a person,” Liza said.
She also considers Enrique as a childhood best friend.
“When I look back at, like our time together, I just see good moments all the time,” she said. “I carry a lot of guilt for not being the one that held on because that’s what my fans wanted to do.”
Liza added that she needed to find herself.
“There were things that I knew that I shouldn’t tolerate for the people that look up to me, for the younger me, and also for my future children,” Liza said.
“And that’s not to say that he’s a bad person. He didn’t do anything bad. Nothing bad happened. Our breakup was really good. It was just we weren’t a match anymore.”
Liza and Enrique were rumored to have broken up in 2022.
Meanwhile, Liza has been focusing on an international career.
She made her Hollywood debut on “Lisa Frankenstein,” as Taffy. She was praised by American film critics for the role.
Liza starred in Thai singer and actor Bright’s music video for “Long Showers” and was also part of the Eric Nam’s digital series, “Stop ‘N Snack.”
She also appeared at the Gold House Gala, Coachella, and Elton John’s Oscars afterparty. —Nika Roque/JCB, GMA Integrated News
