The Montreal Canadiens have just taken a hit that will affect their plans for next season.
These are performance bonuses paid to players this season that exceeded the available space under the salary cap.
That’s $1.93 million less in available cap space for general manager Kent Hughes this summer.

It’s the price to pay when an organization develops so many young players at the same time.
And this season, they reached them.
Hughes knew this was going to happen.
It’s the direct consequence of the success of his young players.
“The Montreal Canadiens knew the performance bonuses they would have to pay their young players, and, at the same time, the salary cap penalty that will be applied to their cap next season.”

But in a summer when the Montreal Canadiens will have to make important decisions on the free-agent market and possibly address their need for a second-line center, every million dollars counts.
This is the kind of constraint that could influence Hughes’ decisions this summer.
We would imagine that Kent Hughes will still be able to make a few interesting additions, but no, it is definitely not ideal under the current circumstances.
