Woman, 23, charged after infant found dead in Brampton home

A 23-year-old woman is facing charges after a newborn was found dead inside a Brampton home on Sunday evening.

Peel Regional Police were called to the home in the area of Kennedy Rd. N. and Williams Pkwy. shortly before 8:30 p.m. A deceased child was found inside the residence soon after officers arrived at the scene, acting Insp. Matthew Miller told reporters.  

A woman was arrested after seeking medical attention at a local hospital, according to a report from CP24, and charged with concealing the body of a child after birth. 

Unclear if baby was alive at birth: Cops

The report said police were trying to determine if the child was alive at the time of their birth.

“The working theory is the birth happened there (in the home) but … it could have happened somewhere else and that is part of what we have to piece together now and whether or not she knew about the pregnancy, we just don’t know,” Const. Tyler Bell told reporters, via CP24. “We have seen cases in the past where it is a surprise.”

Bell said the special victims unit was investigating the cause of the newborn’s death.

Miller told reporters that they continue to appeal for information in the case, which he described as “deeply disturbing.

“The officers involved are also being provided with appropriate mental support as they continue to process the impact of this call,” Miller said. 

Miller said anyone with information about the incident can contact the Peel Regional Police special victims unit at 905-453-2121, Ext. 3460, or Crime Stoppers anonymously. 

“This is at the very early stages of the investigation,” he said. “The scene is being held for further investigation.”

Miller said a search warrant was to be executed at the residence on Monday with the help of the Peel police forensics unit. 

The gender of the newborn was not provided by police. 

An unnamed neighbour told CP24 that there were between 10 to 20 people living inside the home. At one point, it looked like someone was sleeping inside the garage, the neighbour said.

The neighbour described the home as a “revolving door” of occupants.
