Independent Investigations Office seeks witnesses to 2025 South Okanagan arrest

The province’s police watchdog is looking for any witnesses to the 2025 arrest of an Indigenous man near Kaleden in 2025.
The BC First Nations Justice Council brought the case to the attention of the Independent Investigations Office of BC on April 20, 2026.
According to the IIO news release, the man was involved in a rollover crash on June 21, 2025 at around 2 p.m. on Twin Lakes Road.
The vehicle involved was an older model red Jeep. The man left the scene before RCMP arrived, but stayed nearby, and he was arrested after being located with the use of a police service dog.
After being arrested, the man was taken to the hospital for assessment and treatment, later leaving for several days before checking back in. He was pronounced deceased in the hospital on June 27, 2025.
The IIO investigates cases where the police are involved and individuals are injured or die, to determine if there was an injury that meets the threshold of serious harm under the Police Act and to determine if there is a connection between any such serious harm and the actions or inaction of any involved officers.
