Homicide investigators have identified 18-year-old Gaurav Deol as the victim of the suspected gang-related fatal shooting in Surrey on Sunday (May 31).

Surrey Police responded to reports of a shooting around 12:22 a.m. in the 13800-block of 62 Avenue. Officers found the victim “suffering from gunshot wounds” inside a car that had hit a power pole.

“Despite life-saving efforts by first responders, the man died at the scene,” the Integrated Homicide Unit (IHIT) said in a news release Tuesday (June 2).

A short time later, a car fire was reported in the 10600-block of Salisbury Drive. “A burnt white Toyota SUV was recovered and is believed to have been used in the shooting,” IHIT said.

While it is early in the investigation, police believe the shooting was targeted and gang-related. IHIT is working closely with SPS, RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit (SPOSU), the Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS) and the BC Coroners Service.

Police do not always release the name of a homicide victim, but in this instance did so to “advance the investigation.”

“This is a tremendously difficult time for the victim’s family, and IHIT investigators are working with them to understand his lifestyle and activities leading up to the shooting,” says Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT. “A lot of work is underway as we continue an extended canvass for witnesses and video at both the shooting and arson scenes.”

IHIT is looking for witnesses and dashcam video from anyone who was in the area of either scene, between 10:00 p.m. on May 30, 2026, and 1:00 a.m. on May 31, 2026. Anyone with information is urged to contact IHIT at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.

This marks Surrey’s 13th homicide of 2026, and the third teenager to be killed in May, in what police suspect were gang-related shootings.

Police responded to calls of a shooting in an underground parking lot in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood around 10 p.m. on May 10. Police found two young males, 16 and 18 years old, suffering from gunshot wounds. Both died at the scene.
