A large industrial fire that sent thick smoke and a strong odour across parts of Brampton and Mississauga is now under control, according to city officials.

Firefighters remain at the scene today (June 3) near Intermodal Drive and Goreway Drive, where piles of scrap materials caught fire Tuesday afternoon, generating heavy smoke visible from major roadways and surrounding industrial areas.

The smoke and smell from the blaze travelled well beyond the immediate area, with residents reporting the odour in communities stretching south through Mississauga, including neighbourhoods near the Lake Ontario shoreline.

Officials said the fire proved difficult to extinguish because much of the burning material was located deep within the centre of a large scrap pile. Crews used drone technology to locate hot spots and direct suppression efforts more effectively.

At the height of the incident, 14 fire trucks were deployed to the scene as firefighters worked to prevent the blaze from spreading. The City of Brampton said Wednesday morning that the fire is no longer advancing and has been brought under control, although crews continue to monitor the site and carry out overhaul operations.

Residents and businesses in the area were advised to keep windows closed as a precaution while smoke remained in the air. The Ministry of the Environment was also notified of the incident.

No injuries have been reported.

Fire trucks are expected to begin clearing the area over the course of the day, though some crews will remain on site while the response continues and investigators work to determine what caused the fire.

The origin and cause of the blaze remain under investigation. Motorists travelling through the area may continue to encounter minor delays as emergency personnel complete their work and ensure the site is safe.
