Leading officers on a chase ended with charges for a Brampton man who was already wanted for evading police in Halton, investigators say.
The OPP says officers were working traffic enforcement around 10:30 a.m. on Highway 17 when they spotted a 2020 BMW 4XG travelling at nearly 140 km/h in Wiggins Township, north of Thunder Bay.
But police say the vehicle didn’t stop for officers, and the driver tried to evade police by driving down a dead-end road.
Police contained the area and used patrol vehicles to partially block the road, and deployed a tire deflation device, also known as a spike strip, to prevent the vehicle from escaping.
Police say Hamza Aftab, 22, of Brampton, was arrested and charged with flight from peace officer, speeding, driver fail to surrender licence, and drive motor vehicle – fail to display two plates.
Investigators say the same vehicle was involved in a fail to stop incident in Halton Region, and that the accused was wanted on warrants in the same jurisdiction.
The accused has been held in custody and is scheduled to make a court appearance on Wednesday.
