It has been a whirlwind week for Logan Walsh.
Walsh, who trains with the Albion Amateur Boxing Club, arrived back in Pictou County after more than a week of training in Canada and the Netherlands.
He was among athletes Boxing Canada chose to train in Montreal before travelling to the world-renowned Eindhoven Box Cup for more training from May 21-25. He was one of two Nova Scotians on the Canadian roster.
The event takes place annually in the Dutch city of Eindhoven and also attracts boxers from Europe and Asia. It includes training and sparring, which Walsh said he thoroughly enjoyed.
“It was great; it was a really good experience,” he said. “We had one open sparring match and a lot of technical work and prep.”
Walsh said he learned Boxing Canada selected him from his provincial coach. He captured a gold medal in the 60-kg weight category at the 2026 Nationals earlier this year in Calgary.
“I got a text from our provincial coach,” he said. “I was in Mexico on vacation and when I found out I got some training in there. I met a really nice coach there.”
His goal now is to stay in shape for the next national event, which will take place in Membertou, Cape Breton.
“Right now, I want to dominate the Nationals to the fullest,” he said. “I want to show I’m at another level and prepare for the next international competition.”
Walsh said he’s glad he has effective sparring partners in the 63-kg weight class at the Albion club: Mason Urquhart and Tysen Bowen. He also spars with Wyatt Sanford from Kennetcook when he’s able to visit the Albion club. He’s a past national bronze medalist and owns a 6-0 professional record while boxing as a lightweight.
“He’s the best boxer we’ve had in Nova Scotia in a long time,” Walsh said.
Walsh and Sanford have something in common. Walsh was named top senior boxing athlete during Sport Nova Scotia’s annual Support4Sport awards that took place on May 23 in Halifax. Sanford won the award last year.
“I have big shoes to fill,” Walsh said. “I’d like to do what he’s done. It shows I can be at the highest level.”
Walsh was also among three finalists for overall male athlete of the year, a list that included NHL star Nathan MacKinnon. He was unable to attend the awards due to his trip to Europe, but coaches Erin MacGregor and Walter Linthorne did attend to accept Albion’s club of the year award.
MacGregor was also named volunteer of the year for boxing.
“It’s nice to see the club being acknowledged,” MacGregor said. “We all put in a lot of work, so it’s nice to have it celebrated.”
