Fire crews tackled a blaze at a family-owned Brentwood Bay restaurant.
Central Saanich Fire Department says they attended a structure fire early Saturday morning (June 6) at Garden Fork Restaurant around 3 a.m.
Fire Chief Stacy Lee said crews arrived to find the restaurant heavily involved in fire, with flames affecting the basement, main floor and attic.
The fire was effectively knocked down by about 4:30 a.m., though firefighters remained on scene Saturday morning dealing with hot spots.
Unfortunately, the building, located at the corner of Keating Cross and West Saanich roads, sustained significant damage.
Lee confirmed the building is considered a total loss.
Crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby residential units east of the restaurant, which were not damaged.
In a social media post Saturday morning, Garden Fork thanked firefighters and emergency responders for their quick response and said the restaurant would remain closed until further notice following the fire.
No injuries were reported and, according to fire officials, there was no indication anyone was inside the restaurant when crews arrived.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Fire crews had assistance from the Saanich Fire Department, while the Sidney Fire Department provided coverage within Central Saanich in the event of additional emergency calls.
In an emailed statement, Central Saanich Police Service Chief Constable Ian Lawson said police are working with the fire department as the investigation continues.
“At this point, the fire is still under investigation,” Lawson said. “CSPS will work with the Central Saanich Fire Department to determine the cause of the fire. That determination will dictate our next steps.”
Investigators have not yet been able to enter the building due to ongoing hot spots and the extent of the damage.
