Brendan Gallagher’s possible trade return revealed as Canadiens get better news than expected

Against all expectations, the Montreal Canadiens could actually receive something in return for Brendan Gallagher instead of having to pay to move him.
At least, according to Marco D’Amico.
It marks a shift from what many had assumed earlier this week.
D’Amico checked in with several NHL general managers.
And many of them doubt that Kent Hughes would need to attach a draft pick in order to trade the veteran forward.
The reason comes down to Gallagher’s reputation.
“There is a lot of respect for him around the league,” explained D’Amico.
That changes the picture entirely.
The idea that Gallagher would need to be moved at a discount appears to be fading quickly.
Even better news for Montreal, a return could be possible.
The Canadiens may be able to acquire an asset in exchange rather than simply creating cap space.

Gallagher’s contract had been a major source of concern.
At $6.5 million per season, many expected Montreal would have to pay a price to complete a trade.
The reality of the market may be more nuanced.
The veteran’s leadership qualities and warrior mentality still carry significant value in the eyes of several teams.
His recent offensive production remains modest, however.
Gallagher recorded 7 goals and 16 assists in 77 games this season while playing a reduced role.
But some qualities cannot be measured on a scoresheet.
