Winnipeg Pride parade, events to see road closures, heat warnings

The annual Pride parade will be marching through downtown Winnipeg on Sunday in a colourful celebration of the city’s 2SLGBTQ+ community that will see road closures and heat warnings throughout the day.

Several streets along the parade route will be closed on Sunday. They include:

Memorial Boulevard in both directions from Broadway to York Avenue

Northbound Memorial Boulevard from York Avenue to Portage Avenue

Eastbound Portage Avenue from Memorial Boulevard to Main Street

Southbound Main Street from Portage Avenue to William Stephenson Way

Eastbound William Stephenson Way from Main Street to Israel Asper Way

Winnipeg was under a yellow-level heat warning on Sunday, with Environment Canada forecasting a high of 34 C. It’s expected to be hot, sunny and windy, the forecast said.

People planning to attend Pride events on Sunday are encouraged to drink water and bring reusable water bottles, which can be refilled at water stations set up at The Forks, Pride organizers said in a social media post.

Organizers said in a separate post that high winds may affect the availability of patio umbrellas and tents on site.

Sunday’s Pride festivities will kick off with a rally at the Manitoba legislature building at 10 a.m., with the parade starting to march through downtown Winnipeg at 11 a.m.

Pride festival events will start at 12 p.m. at The Forks, with drag, music and theatre performances running into the evening.
