New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani on the Knicks: ‘This moment means everything’

New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani is keenly aware of the effect of this magical New York Knicks’ NBA Finals run.

“This moment means everything for so many across the city,” Mamdani told The Athletic in a recent interview. “It feels like the transformation of the world’s greatest city into the world greatest small town, where not only are we all thinking about the same thing, but we’re all praying for the same thing.”

That’s why the mayor said his main area of focus during the Knicks finals run has been to keep the areas around the team’s watch party safe.

“I think thus far the focus is on the question of watch parties and ensuring the safety and the security and also that they’re places of joy where New Yorkers can gather,” Mamdani said.

Knicks fans’ exuberance has been one of the biggest stories of the spring. After waiting 27 years to return to the finals and 53 years for another NBA title, fans have spilled out into the streets and filled up watch parties at MSG and outside of the arena.

Mamdani and the NYPD have worked with the Knicks to keep the events going, though they needed late sign-offs for Games 1 and 2. The events have not been without incident. The NYPD arrested 17 people during Game 2, and one officer was injured.

“This is the constant bounce in any time of immense excitement and joy is that we want to make sure that it is safe, it is secure, and also that we are not stifling a moment that New Yorkers are going to remember for a long time,” Mamdani said. “And I think in the World Cup we’ll see a similar thing where, yes, we are focused on making sure it’s a safe and secure World Cup, and also one where that is not stifling the excitement of the experience. And, I can tell you that as a fan, yes, you build your entire day for the game. But the memories you have are before, they’re after, they’re at the fan zone, they are across the city, and that’s something we want to make sure that others get to have here.”

The mayor sees it as a victory that Knicks owner James Dolan and Madison Square Garden gave away at least 500 finals tickets to underprivileged families for Games 3 and 4, and may give more for Game 6. That, Mamdani said, was important to him, just as it was to get cheap tickets for the World Cup games in New Jersey.

“I’m appreciative of the fact that Mr. Dolan has provided a number of hundreds of tickets for these finals for those who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford it,” he said. “I think this is a moment where everyone is thinking about the Knicks … (While campaigning), I remember speaking about the fact that we’re going to fight for affordable tickets and there are many who rolled their eyes. And now there will be a thousand New Yorkers who otherwise wouldn’t have been able to go to the game for whom this will mean everything and that’s an incredible opportunity.”

It remains to be seen if Mamdani will make an appearance at a Knicks game during the finals. He went to a playoff game earlier this spring, quietly getting a seat in the nosebleeds with another city politician. President Donald Trump is expected to attend Game 3, which will increase security protocols. Mamdani’s status remains unclear.
