BALTIMORE — Understandably, Shane Baz knew better than to voice what he really thought.
He had already said enough on the field.
As the Orioles right-handed starter walked toward the visitors’ dugout after a disastrous sixth inning Sunday afternoon, MASN broadcast cameras captured him shouting expletives in the direction of second-base umpire Nic Lentz. By the time Baz arrived in the clubhouse following Baltimore’s 6-4 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, he opted for restraint instead.
I can’t say I would have done the same. Probably a wise financial decision on Baz’s part.
“The only reason that I’m not gonna talk about that play is because I will get fined,” he said.
The Orioles’ defeat, which robbed them of a series win, should not be reduced to a single moment. Baz had his own struggles, while Baltimore’s offense cooled off and Toronto seized momentum. The Orioles had opportunities to keep control of a game they led 4-0.
But the call in question is too egregious to ignore.
With the Orioles protecting a three-run lead in the sixth, shortstop Gunnar Henderson fielded a ground ball and moved toward Clement, who was advancing from first to second. As Henderson attempted to apply a tag, Clement veered sharply to his right, away from the tag attempt and certainly away from a direct path to second base.
