At a time where it seems like organizing races is harder than ever, some good news for Ontario riders, there’s a new criterium series set to launch in Ontario this summer, offering a different approach to racing for riders of all experience levels. The announcement comes after a recent Ontario Cup was cancelled, so it’s good news for riders who are itching to race.
Where
The York Durham Crit Series is scheduled to feature five Wednesday evening events on a new course just north of Stouffville, Ont.
Organizers say the series is aimed at everyone from first-time racers to seasoned crit specialists.
Unique format
What sets the series apart is its “paced-then-race” format for beginner and intermediate categories.
Riders will start with timed segments at controlled speeds before the race opens up for an all-out finish. Beginner racers will progress through speeds of 30 km/h, 32 km/h and 34 km/h before a final sprint segment, while intermediate riders will tackle paced sections at 34 km/h, 36 km/h and 38 km/h before racing flat out.
What tips do I need for my first criterium?
The experienced category will be raced traditionally, with competitors going full gas from the start.
The five-race calendar will also offer discounted entry fees for women and under-19 riders, who will pay half price.
The series is to be sanctioned by Ontario Cycling, and you will need at least a challenge license to compete.
Organizers are still looking for anyone that can volunteer their time with this great addition to the summer, so feel free to reach out.
