EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE men’s soccer Head Coach Cale Wassermann has rounded out his staff ahead of the 2025 season. Drew Romig and former Jack Blake Award winner Alsadiq Hasan join the staff as assistant coaches.

“The addition of Sadiq and Drew as individuals is amazing on its own, but more importantly is how they fit with our full staff and that is what I am most excited about” Wasserman said. “Jordan Grant has done an amazing job on our staff over the last four years and both Sadiq and Drew will pair well with Jordan and I as we all balance each other’s strengths and weaknesses. I am thrilled to get going with this staff and team as we prep for our home opener.”

Romig joins as the assistant coach with a focus on goalkeeping. He joins the Cougars after most recently playing in USL League 1 with the Charlotte Independence. He also has professional experience with Memphis in the USL Championship, where he made 24 starts in goal. Romig spent the 2021 season with Tormenta FC2 in Statesboro, Georgia where was named USL League Two Goalkeeper of the Year, earned spots on the USL League Two National Team of the Year and the USL League Two Southern Conference Team of the Year.

“With Drew’s playing background, he comes into our staff with immediate credibility and value,” Wassermann said. “He brings a wealth of expertise and experience from his time in the youth national team set up, college soccer, and professional soccer, which will translate to the players.”

Romig began his college career at North Carolina where he was part of back-to-back ACC Championship teams in 2016 and 2017. He transferred to Belmont where he amassed a record of 18-2-8 in 28 games in 2020 and 2021. In 2021, Romig was named to the SoCon All-Tournament team and was an All-South Region First Team selection.

“Drew spent time with our Assistant Coach Jordan Grant at Belmont where they built a great relationship,” Wasserman added. “I had the pleasure of watching Drew live on many occasions. Drew is very detail-oriented and has a great mindset to always be improving. That will be a huge factor as he transitions out of his professional playing career and into full time coaching.”

Hasan returns to Edwardsville, where he concluded his college playing career by helping to lead SIUE to an Ohio Valley Conference regular season and tournament title in his final season in 2023. On the coaching staff, Hasan will focus on player development.

“I could not be more thrilled to welcome Sadiq back this fall,” Wassermann said. “This program would not be back on the national stage without Sadiq and the work he did here as a player. As a captain and leader, he always showed the qualities of a coach and was always connected well with everyone in the locker room. Along with other roles, Sadiq’s main focus will be on player development. It is vital that our players have someone like Sadiq who can work with them on little details, individual development, and growth on and off the field.”

In two seasons, he appeared in 32 games, making 27 starts for the Cougars. He scored five goals and added two assists and was an All-OVC selection in 2023.

Hasan was the 2023 recipient of the Jack Blake Award, SIUE men’s soccer’s highest individual honor.

Following his time as a player at SIUE, Hasan played professionally with South Georgia Tormenta FC in USL League 1. Most recently, Hasan played with the Fort Wayne FC in USL League 2. He also coaches youth soccer for Saint Louis Scott Gallagher.

“The addition of Sadiq to the staff this year will bring huge value to the program while also providing Sadiq the opportunity to dive into the college game as he grows as a quality young coach with huge potential,” Wassermann added.

SIUE will welcome Evansville to Korte Stadium Saturday night for the final preseason game. The Cougars open the regular season Aug. 21 when Florida Gulf Coast comes to Edwardsville.
