LETTER: Surrey needs another SkyTrain, not Bus Rapid Transit

A second thought about the King George Bus Rapid Transit service. I realized the other day that the BRT will not bring much-needed development/redevelopment along King George and the Newton area.
With each SkyTrain extension that was always a big factor of the plan. Well have you seen King George? It needs to be redeveloped, especially in Newton. There should be no need for the shopping centres like King’s Cross with their big parking lot, and empty-handed lots at King George and 72nd.
A SkyTrain to Newton would reach a larger population serving Whalley, Newton, North Delta and South Surrey/White Rock than the Langley extension. That’s why it was first planned to begin with.
Also most people from South Surrey commute along Highway 99 and go express to Richmond. Why would they travel to King George and then take a crowded SkyTrain.
I would love to see a new Newton, but SkyTrain is the only way for it to work regardless of the cost. Sure, the bus is always full from White Rock, but most people get off at Newton Exchange. A B-line from White Rock to Newton would work just as well.
Please build SkyTrain from Guildford to Newton or, even better, to South Newton. This will be the largest city shortly, so let’s start treating it like it.
